91 chart types. Each one with a rule for when to use it.
Chart Studio carries 91 chart types in seven families, mapped to 82 standard Excel chart types plus intelligence and network views. Every type states when it fits, and which of the 100 use cases it answers.
Recommended
The defaults: bullseye, timeline, bar, heatmap, Sankey, world map, network, scatter, line, forest plot, ranked table.
Compare
Grouped and stacked bars, dumbbell, slope, quadrant, BCG matrix, waterfall, tornado, Pareto, funnel, treemap, KPI panels.
Time & events
Gantt, event-annotated line, cumulative flow, sparkline grid, small multiples, stream graph, anomaly series.
Network & flow
Ego network, sponsor-to-indication graphs, chord, alluvial, adjacency matrix, ownership tree, co-occurrence.
Geography
Flow maps of multi-country trials and site footprints, alongside the world choropleth in Recommended.
Intelligence
Analyst methods: competing hypotheses, estimative language, linchpin, probabilityâimpact, fan chart, scenario tree, diff view.
Advanced
Box and violin plots, ridgelines, control charts, cohort grids, cartograms, perceptual maps, PCA and topic landscapes.

Pick the question; the use-case template picks the chart. Change it in Chart Studio whenever the data says otherwise.
Where is immunology crowded, and at which phase?
A bar chart answers "how many". A heatmap answers "how many, where, and when" in one view. Read across a row to see where a disease's pipeline sits; read down a column to compare crowding at the same stage.
The read: lupus is crowded early (99 Phase 1 trials) and thins out by Phase 3. Psoriasis is the reverse, with 63 Phase 3 trials. Rheumatoid arthritis carries the fewest Phase 3 trials of the six.
ClinicalTrials.gov API, pulled 16 Oct 2026: recruiting, not yet recruiting, active or by invitation; interventional; industry lead sponsor. A trial listing several conditions or phases (for example Phase 1/2) counts in each cell.
Eight sponsors hold 20.4% of 186 oncology Phase 3 trials
Comphas oncology Phase 3 board, ClinicalTrials.gov as of 11 Sep 2026. Sponsors anonymised; "Other" groups 121 sponsors.
Recruiting: 118 of 186 (63%)
Same board and date. A donut is used here because there are only two slices.
Industry runs 245 of 278 Phase 3 atopic dermatitis trials; 23 of those stopped
ClinicalTrials.gov API, pulled 16 Oct 2026: interventional Phase 3 atopic dermatitis trials, all years. Stopped = terminated, withdrawn or suspended. Government includes NIH, federal, other government, networks and individual investigators.
China hosts 28 of 48 recruiting industry atopic dermatitis trials
ClinicalTrials.gov API, pulled 16 Oct 2026: recruiting, interventional, industry lead sponsor, Phase 2â3 atopic dermatitis (n = 48). A multinational trial counts in every country with a site. Tiles are placed roughly by geography.
A chart library that won't let you mislead yourself.
Each chart type carries its own guardrail. Where a chart needs data the registry doesn't hold, Comphas says so instead of drawing it anyway.
- Pie · donutFour slices at most. More than four, use a bar.
- Forest plotNeeds an effect size and a confidence interval. Never drawn from enrollment.
- Kaplan-MeierRegistry completion is labelled as such. It is not patient survival.
- Fan chartMean ±1/2Ï of a series. Labelled as not a fitted model.
- Scenario treeBuilt from status counts. Labelled as not a fitted decision model.
- Catchment mapSymbol size follows site counts. Not true GIS radii.
- ProbabilityâimpactEnrollment and site counts used as proxies, and labelled as proxies.
- GaugeAvailable, but the bullet chart is preferred for a KPI against a target.
Analyst methods, not just charts.
Competitive intelligence has its own structured techniques. Comphas brings seven of them onto the same registry rows, so the reasoning sits next to the evidence.
Competing hypotheses (ACH)
Hypotheses against evidence, cell by cell: consistent, inconsistent or neutral.
Estimative-language strip
Maps the evidence onto calibrated wording from "almost certain" to "remote", following ICD 203 bands.
Linchpin diagram
The key assumption and everything that depends on it.
Probabilityâimpact bubble
Likelihood against impact, with confidence as size, proxies labelled.
Fan chart & scenario tree
Ranges and branches built from the data, clearly marked as not fitted models.
Diff view
Dataset A against dataset B: what is new, what dropped out, what stayed.
